Liposuction is a procedure which removes fat through tiny incisions utilizing a small, thin tube called a cannula. Once removed, the fatty tissue will not return. While existing fats cells can expand and contract, the human body is incapable of creating new fat cells. Liposuction results are permanent.
Liposuction is one of the best ways to improve the contour of the body. Women with fatty deposits in the outer thighs (“saddle bags”) can spend endless hours in the gym without reaching the desired result. Many areas of the body such as this have a genetically predetermined ratio of fat. Liposuction is the only permanent way to reduce the percentage of fat in such areas.
Who should have liposuction?
You are an excellent candidate for liposuction if you possess well defined bulges of fat that do not disappear with diet or exercise. While the success of your procedure will depend on the tone of the skin in that particular area, most cases result in noticeable improvement. Liposuction should not be used as a means to lose weight. However, many patients who have liposuction go on to lose weight.
What we do differently
In many instances liposuction can be comfortably performed in the office with local anesthesia and mild sedation. We offer different options for anesthetic management at Pearl Women’s Center.
External ultrasound may be used to help loosen the fat and make it easier to remove. This can help decrease bruising and is potentially less traumatic to tissue, allowing for a faster recovery.
Pearl Women’s Center employs state-of-the-art Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL). Instead of the surgeon’s hand moving the cannula, a power handle very quickly and gently provides the “back and forth” motion. It is gentler on tissues and is a more efficient way of removing the fat. More importantly, it allows for more precise body sculpting and a more complete result.
You can be active very soon after your surgery
Minimal dressings and a comfortable supportive garment are worn after your procedure. Bruising and swelling are expected to a variable degree after the surgery but typically resolve within 7-14 days.
