FDA Warns of Serious Complications from Commonly Used Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

On July 13, 2011, the FDA issued a safety update on serious complications associated with transvaginal placement of surgical mesh for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. Transvaginal placement refers to mesh that is surgically inserted through the vagina. Complications include mesh erosion and contraction which may lead to severe pelvic pain and painful sexual intercourse.

Because pelvic floor disorders are very common in women who have experienced multiple child births, this is an important advisory for women to understand. Dr. Richard Rosenfield recently discussed the advisory and the many options women have to correct pelvic floor disorders that do not involve transvaginal insertion of surgical mesh. Hysterectomy is the most common major surgery not related to pregnancy performed on women in the United States.
